Democrat Janelle Bynum is projected to win Oregon’s fifth Congressional District, based on Choice Desk HQ, making her the first Black lawmaker to symbolize Oregon in Congress.
Bynum, an Oregon state consultant, has ousted first-term incumbent Republican Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, (R) who flipped the seat into the GOP column for the primary time in many years in the course of the midterms.
Democrats have been optimistic about Bynum’s possibilities of retaking the seat, pointing to her success towards Chavez-DeRemer in two state legislature races. She beat out progressive Jamie McLeod-Skinner, final 12 months’s Democratic nominee, within the primaries to win the get together nod.
Institution Democrats rallied round Bynum, with endorsements from Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek (D) and EMILY’s Listing, a bunch that had endorsed McLeod-Skinner two years earlier.
Biden gained the district, representing the suburbs of Portland and Salem, by practically 9 factors in 2020.
