The Division of Justice has opened an investigation into the killing of Sonya Massey, a Black girl shot by a white police officer in July after calling to report a prowler exterior her residence.
In a letter to Illinois’ Sangamon County Sheriff’s Workplace, the DOJ stated the taking pictures raised “serious concerns about SCSO’s interactions with Black people and people with behavioral health disabilities.”
The DOJ added that the incident has raised issues in regards to the “policies, practices, procedures, and training regarding community policing, bias-free policing, response to behavioral health crises, use of force, de-escalation” on the sheriff’s workplace.
The DOJ has requested copies of all paperwork associated to Massey’s case, together with cellphone logs, dispatch data, recordings, physique digicam footage and a listing of all personnel who responded to the scene. The SCSO has till Dec.14 to offer the requested paperwork.
Massey was fatally shot by deputy Sean Grayson in July.
When officers arrived, Massey opened her door and instantly stated, “Don’t damage me.”
