Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) slammed the Division of Justice (DOJ) for dismissing the felony case towards New York Mayor Eric Adams, saying it’s “outright extortion.”
Goldman joined MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki” on Sunday, the place he weighed in on the mayor’s authorized developments.
“It is an outright extortion,” he stated. “This is way, way, way outside the bounds of the Department of Justice.”
The DOJ formally requested a federal district courtroom to drop the corruption fees towards Adams after federal prosecutors in Manhattan resigned as an alternative of dismissing the case.
Legal professional Basic Pam Bondi stated on Friday that the costs towards the mayor, introduced final September, had been going to be dismissed.
Appearing Deputy Legal professional Basic Emil Bove stated the felony proceedings intervene with Adams’ capability to manipulate New York Metropolis and that will pose “unacceptable threats” to security and safety.
Despite the fact that Goldman criticized Adams’ fees being dismissed, he wasn’t very supportive for New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) to take away him from his management place.
“I hope we don’t get there,” he stated. “I expect that there will be a resolution among the leaders of our political establishment in New York that hopefully would avoid something like that.”
Because the Trump administration settles into its new roles, there’s concern that Bondi would succumb to strain from President Trump and use the division to prosecute his political enemies. Goldman expressed concern over the state of the DOJ.
“The politicization of the Department of Justice in a really bad and dangerous way … has to stop, and somebody needs to put a stop to it,” he stated.
