The U.S. is providing a reward of as much as $20 million for data resulting in the arrest or conviction of an Iranian man accused of plotting to assassinate former U.S. nationwide safety adviser John Bolton.
The Division of Justice alleges Shahram Poursafi, a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), tried to rent criminals to assassinate Bolton, a former high official within the Trump White Home, between October 2021 and April 2022 in Washington and Maryland in change for $300,000.
The U.S. charged Poursafi on Aug. 5, 2022, accusing him of being concerned in a murder-for-hire plot and offering materials assist for a transnational homicide plot. The Treasury Division designated him as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” in June final 12 months. He stays at giant.
“Poursafi told the potential assassin – who actually became a confidential source for U.S. investigators – that once he completed the Bolton murder he would have a second assassination job for him,” the State Division press workplace mentioned in a launch Thursday.
The announcement of the reward comes days after the Trump marketing campaign mentioned the ex-president was briefed by intelligence officers about Iran’s alleged assassination threats in opposition to him. Qassem Soleimani, a high basic within the IRGC, was killed in a January 2020 drone strike licensed by then-President Trump. Bolton, a frequent critic of Iran, served because the ex-president’s nationwide safety adviser from April 2018 to September 2019.
